A shot fired from a gun held near the hip, without taking proper aim, typically as a means of firing quickly. Also figurative: an impulsive or spontaneous act, statement, etc. Cf. to shoot from the hip at shoot v. Additions.In quot. 1874: a person who shoots in this way.
