单词 appreciator
释义

appreciatorn.

Brit. /əˈpriːʃɪeɪtə/, /əˈpriːsɪeɪtə/, U.S. /əˈpriʃiˌeɪdər/, /əˈprɪʃiˌeɪdər/
Forms:

α. 1700s appretiator, 1700s– appreciator.

β. 1900s– appreciater.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin appreciator ; appreciate v., -or suffix.
Etymology: Partly < (i) post-classical Latin appreciator, appretiator valuer, appraiser (from 13th cent. in British and continental sources) < appretiat- , past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of appretiare (see appreciate v.) + -or -or suffix, and partly < (ii) appreciate v. + -or suffix. Compare French appréciateur person who estimates the monetary value of something (1509 in Middle French), person who recognizes the merit of something (1735).The β. forms show suffix substitution (compare -er suffix1).
A person who appreciates something; spec. a person who recognizes and esteems worth or excellence in something. Formerly also (chiefly Scots Law): †a person who estimates the monetary value of something (obsolete).
