Etymology: < Old French apay-er, apai-er (Provençal apaiar , apagar ), < late Latin *adpācāre , < ad to, completely + pācāre to please, satisfy, originally to pacify, < pāc-em peace (compare appease v. and pay v.1). After 1500 often refashioned as ap-pay : see ap- prefix1. Since 1700, found only in past participle, as a poetic archaism: see apaid adj.
