Etymology: Old English hęregield , < hęre host, the (Danish) army + gield, gyld, gild payment, tribute, tax = Old Saxon geld , Old High German gelt , Old Norse gjald , Gothic gild , tribute, payment. The Old English word did not survive into Middle English It was taken up by legal antiquaries and historical writers of the 17th century, who interpreted the Anglo-Saxon g as g ; the regular antiquarian form is, therefore, heregeld , -gild (compare Danegeld n.).
Obsolete exc. Historical.
Anglo-Saxon History. The tribute paid to the Danish host; the tax collected to subsidize the Danes; Danegeld.
