Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Helicobacter.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Helicobacter, genus name (C. S. Goodwin et al.: see quot. 1989) < ancient Greek ἑλικο- helico- comb. form + -bacter (in Campylobacter n., etc.).
Microbiology and Medicine.
A genus of Gram-negative, microaerophilic bacteria with helical, curved, or straight cells, isolated chiefly from the digestive tract of mammals; (also helicobacter) a bacterium of this genus, esp. Helicobacter pylori, which causes chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease in humans.

1989 C. S. Goodwin et al. in Internat. Jrnl. Systematic Bacteriol. 39 398/1 These bacteria are candidates for inclusion in the new genus Helicobacter. The name Helicobacter refers to the morphology of the organisms, which are helical in vivo.
