Etymology: < hendeca- comb. form + syllable n., after classical Latin hendecasyllabus line of eleven syllables, (plural) poetry composed of such lines (use as noun of masculine of hendecasyllabus (of a line) consisting of eleven syllables < Hellenistic Greek ἑνδεκασύλλαβος consisting of eleven syllables < ancient Greek ἑνδεκα- hendeca- comb. form + σύλλαβή syllable n.). Compare earlier disyllable n., monosyllable n., trisyllable n., etc.Compare Middle French, French hendécasyllabe, noun (1549) and adjective (1573 as endecasyllabe), Spanish endecasilabo, adjective (1596 as endecasylabo), Italian endecasillabo, noun (a1525). N.E.D. (1898) also gives the pronunciation (he:ndĭ-kăsi·lăb'l) /hɛndɪkəˈsɪləb(ə)l/.
