Etymology: < medieval Latin hēgūmenus, < Greek ἡγούμενος chief of an abbey, abbot, present participle of ἡγεῖσθαι to lead, command, used substantively. Also in Greek form. Compare French hégoumène (Littré Suppl.).
In the Greek Church: The head of any religious community; spec. the head of a monastery of the second class, corresponding to the abbot of a second-class convent; also, the second person in authority in a large monastery, corresponding to a prior in the West.
