1. Astronomy. With the. (A name for) the Pleiades, a prominent open cluster of stars in the constellation Taurus (see Pleiad n. 1). Obsolete.

3. A children's chasing game.In the most widely known version of this game, a number of players take the role of ‘chickens’ and form a line, each holding the clothes of the child in front, behind a player designated the ‘hen’, who leads them as they walk around the remaining player, designated the ‘fox’, while the two of them conduct a set dialogue, on completion of which all players scatter and the fox attempts to catch them. Quot. 2003 appears to denote a slightly different version of the same game.There is also some regional variation as regards the name of the player acting as catcher, who is designated the ‘old woman’ in some versions of the game.
