Etymology: < holy adj. + war n.1, originally after post-classical Latin bellum sacrum (12th cent. or earlier; 1557 in the passage translated in quot. ?1580 at sense 1).With the use in sense 1, compare also Arabic ḥarb muqaddasa, literally ‘holy war’; however, in specifically Islamic theological contexts, jihād is the usual Arabic word.
1. A war declared or waged in support of a religious cause; a violent campaign carried out, esp. by religious fundamentalists, to further the cause of a religion or a particular ideology; spec. (with the) the Crusades; a campaign during, or forming part of, the Crusades (see crusade n. 1a).The term is often applied to historical campaigns and also to the jihad (see jihad n. 1).
