Etymology: Apparently < (i) Dutch hoofdstuk large cannon (although this is first attested slightly later: 1530 as hootstuck ; < hoofd head n.1 + stuk piece of ordnance, cannon (16th cent.), specific use of stuk piece: see stitch n.2), or its equivalent (ii) Middle Low German hȫvetstücke, with remodelling of the first element after head n.1 and unrounding of the vowel in the second element (either in the donor language or in English; compare masterstick n.). Compare early modern German haubtstück (16th cent. or earlier). With the second element compare earlier (in different senses) stick n.2
