Etymology: < head n.1 + ward n.2In Old English a strong feminine (hēafodweard ). Compare also Old English (strong masculine) hēafodweard chief guard or guardian, leader ( < head n.1 + ward n.1) and its Old Icelandic parallel hǫfuðvǫrðr bodyguard.
Obsolete.
The action of guarding the person or life of one's lord; attendance as a guard upon one's lord.In quot. OE with reference to a death watch. In quots. lOE1, lOE2 denoting a legal obligation associated with land tenure.In quot. 1861 and occasional later use only in renderings or discussions of the Old English attestations in Beowulf and Rectitudines.
