A public house, esp. one that is gaudily or pretentiously decorated.The first gin palaces of the early 19th cent. were large gaslit drinking establishments serving mainly gin; subsequently the term was typically used for any public house with features such as large windows, mirrors, wallpapered interiors, gilding, and ornate mouldings on the exterior.
