Cf. mould-shot n.2Used chiefly in bills of mortality in the 17th and 18th centuries, in which it is usually not clear whether the condition affected children, adults, or both. In quot. 1750 head-mould-shot and horseshoe-head are included among diseases of children (cf. also head-mould-shottenness n., which was taken to be inflammation of the brain in children).In the 18th cent., often identified as overriding of the bones of the skull, which is not uncommon (and usually not pathological) in infants in the first few days after delivery; cf. quot. 1719, and mould-shot n.2In the 19th and 20th centuries, sometimes identified as hydrocephalus, perhaps because of its frequent inclusion with horseshoe head and water in the head in many bills of mortality.In quot. 1816 apparently understood as: premature closure of the sutures of the skull.
