head-fish n. (a) an edible marine fish (not identified) found in Asian waters (obsolete rare); (b) (originally U.S.) an ocean sunfish (family Molidae), which has the appearance of consisting chiefly of a large head without a tail. [In sense (b) perhaps after scientific Latin Cephalus, former genus name of the sunfishes ( G. Shaw Gen. Zool. (1804) V. 437; < ancient Greek κεϕαλή head: see cephalo- comb. form), unless this is itself after English.]
