Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < Middle French, French †planton sprig, shoot (although this is apparently first attested later: 1584) < plante plant n.1 + -on -oon suffix; compare Spanish plantón seedling, young plant (c1400 or earlier), Italian piantone graft, young tree (1298). Compare also Anglo-Norman plançun , planceoun , plaunceoun sprig, shoot (first half of the 12th cent.), seedling, plant (end of the 13th cent. or earlier), Old French, Middle French, French plançon (12th cent.), Old Occitan planczo (second half of the 11th cent.; Occitan plançon ), Catalan plançó (13th cent.), Spanish †plançón sprig, young shoot (mid 13th cent.), all < an unattested post-classical Latin form *plantio seedling ( < classical Latin plantāre plant v. + -io -ion suffix1).
