Etymology: < head n.1 + race n.1 In sense 1 with reference to the head of water in a mill (compare head n.1 44b). Compare slightly earlier tail-race n. In sense 2 with reference to competition to become the leading boat in the race (compare head of the river n. at head n.1 Phrases 3m).
1. The (typically artificial) channel that brings water to a mill wheel or turbine. Cf. tail-race n. a.
