1. Originally Scottish. A women's hairstyle popular in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, consisting of a very high gathering of hair supported internally by a pad or wire frame; a pad or frame worn as part of such a style. Also: a high headdress resembling this style and supported in a similar way. Cf. cockernony n., commode n. 1. Obsolete.
