Elvis has left the building and variants: used to express the finality of a situation when a person has died or made a dramatic or notable exit, or when a thing is definitively and permanently concluded. Similarly (in extended use) —— has left the building: used to indicate that the specified person or thing has departed, is finished, or has ceased to exist.The phrase was commonly used (originally by radio producer Horace Lee Logan in 1956) as a public announcement at the end of Elvis Presley's concerts, to inform the fans that there was no possibility of his performing another encore. In earliest figurative use (quot. 1977) with allusion to Presley's death on 16 August 1977.
