Etymology: < Arctic adj. + pole n.² In sense 1 after classical Latin arcticus polus (in post-classical Latin also polus arcticus), in turn after ancient Greek ἀρκτικὸς πόλος. In sense 2 originally after Spanish polo ártico (1590 (in the passage translated in quot. 1604) or earlier in this sense; for the earlier sense ‘Pole Star’, see pole arctic n.); the French original of quot. 1683 does not use pôle arctique .
