单词 arctic pole
释义

Arctic Polen.

Brit. /ˌɑːktɪk ˈpəʊl/, U.S. /ˈɑrktɪk ˈpoʊl/; see also Arctic adj. and n.
Forms: see Arctic adj. and n. and pole n.2
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Arctic adj., pole n.2
Etymology: < Arctic adj. + pole n.2 In sense 1 after classical Latin arcticus polus (in post-classical Latin also polus arcticus), in turn after ancient Greek ἀρκτικὸς πόλος. In sense 2 originally after Spanish polo ártico (1590 (in the passage translated in quot. 1604) or earlier in this sense; for the earlier sense ‘Pole Star’, see pole arctic n.); the French original of quot. 1683 does not use pôle arctique . Compare earlier pole arctic n. and the Romance parallels cited at that entry. Compare also earlier north pole n., Antarctic Pole n.
1. Astronomy †The Pole Star (Polaris, α Ursae Minoris) (obsolete). Also: the north celestial pole (now historical and rare). See also the earlier pole arctic n.Quot. 1509 appears to show ‘Arctic pool’, which may perhaps have arisen by confusion with Arctic pole.
