Etymology: < Maori hāpuku, whāpuku groper.Forms with final -a reflect the development of the unstressed final vowel within English. On variation between p and b , see note at ponga n.
Originally New Zealand.
A wreckfish (family Polyprionidae); (now) spec. Polyprion oxygeneios, a large perciform food fish found off New Zealand and other coasts of southern waters. Also called blue cod, groper.
