Etymology: < hap n.1 + -ly suffix2. Compare happily adv. and later haps adv., perhaps adv.See also forms with medial -e- at happily adv. which, in senses corresponding to those below (compare senses 1 and 2 at that entry), could alternatively be interpreted as reflecting forms with final -e of hap n.1, and hence as showing forms of this word.
Now archaic and poetic.
