单词 haligonian
释义

Haligoniann.adj.

Brit. /halᵻˈɡəʊnɪən/, U.S. /ˌhæləˈɡoʊniən/
Forms: 1800s– Haligonian, 1800s– Halegonian.
Origin: Apparently from a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Halifax , Aberdonian n., Devonian adj.English -onian.
Etymology: Apparently < Hali- (in the name of Halifax, Nova Scotia) + -onian (in e.g. Aberdonian n., Devonian adj., etc.), with insertion of -g- (see note). Compare use of Haligonia as a name in poetic contexts for Halifax, Nova Scotia and the surrounding area (1840 or earlier), although this is first attested slightly later and may be modelled on the adjective or noun. The Canadian city of Halifax was named in 1749 in honour of George Montagu-Dunk, 2nd Earl of Halifax (1716–71), British statesman who aided the foundation of Nova Scotia. The origin of the -g- in Haligonian and in Haligonia (as a name for Halifax, Nova Scotia) is uncertain. It may be purely euphonic, perhaps resulting from association with e.g. Oregonian n. and adj., Patagonian adj. and n., Aragonian n. and adj., etc. Evidence is lacking for the theory that it reflects *Haligonia , a supposed (but unattested) post-classical Latin name for Halifax, West Yorkshire (see Halifax n.), said to arise from a popular belief (dating back to at least 1587 but no lonɡer ɡenerally accepted) that the English place name is derived from Old English hālig fæx, lit. ‘holy hair’.
