Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: garden n., carpet n.
Etymology: < garden n. + carpet n. Senses 1 and 2 probably arose independently of one another.
1. More fully garden carpet moth. A geometrid moth often found in gardens and allotments, Xanthorhoe fluctuata, having greyish-white wings with a variable pattern of darker markings on the forewing, and caterpillars which feed on brassicas, nasturtiums, and related plants. Cf. carpet n. 4, carpet-moth n. at carpet n. Compounds 1e.
