Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic ḥalāwa.
Etymology: < Arabic ḥalāwa sweetmeat, singular corresponding to ḥalwā halva n. Compare earlier halva n., hulwa n.Lane's spelling hhalaweh in quot. 1836 shows his usual transliteration of Arabic a in final position as eh . The form halawi apparently reflects fronting of the final a in Palestinian dialects of Arabic.
A confection made from ground sesame seeds, honey or sugar syrup, and occasionally other ingredients such as spices; = halva n., hulwa n.
