Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French hacquebute a croq.
Etymology: < Middle French hacquebute a croq, etc. (1531 or earlier; < hacquebute hackbut n. + a croc : see arquebus à croc n.), with remodelling of the first element after hackbut n. The β. and γ. forms show substitution of of prep. and upon prep. for the French preposition. Compare earlier hackbut of crochet n. and later arquebus à croc n. (and the discussion at that entry).With the forms hackbutt a crooke, hagbut a crooke at α. forms, and hackbut of croicke at β. forms compare the ultimately related crook n. With the form hagbut of croche at β. forms compare Middle French croche hook (feminine corresponding to croc : see croche n.2).
