单词 hackboat
释义

hackboatn.1

Forms:

α. Middle English hakbote, Middle English hakebot, Middle English hakebote, 1600s–1700s hackboat; see also hagboat n.

β. Middle English hecboat, Middle English hekbett, Middle English hekbote, Middle English hekebeyt, Middle English helebote (transmission error), 1800s heckboat.

γ. Middle English hogbote, Middle English houkebot.

Origin: Probably a borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: Dutch hoecboot; Dutch hekboot.
Etymology: Probably originally (in γ. forms, although these are not the earliest attested) < Middle Dutch hoecboot kind of fishing boat (apparently < hoec hook n.1 + boot boat n.1; compare Middle Low German hukbōt kind of small boat, and also hooker n.2); probably with remodelling of the first element respectively (in α. forms) after hake n.2 (although this is first attested later) and (in β. forms) perhaps after Anglo-Norman hek , variant of esche fish hook (c1290 or earlier; < classical Latin esca bait: see eche n.2); compare also early modern Dutch haecboot (16th cent. in Kiliaan as a variant of hoecboot ). In sense 2 either associated with or reborrowed < Dutch hekboot kind of seagoing vessel with a square stern (1669 or earlier) < hek the flat part of a ship's stern (1671; specific use of hek grating, frame: see hatch n.1 and compare heck n.1) + boot boat n.1 With this sense compare (after Dutch) German Heckboot (1748 or earlier), Swedish häckbåt (1730).With use with reference to the medieval ship type (see sense 1) perhaps compare also early Middle Dutch hegbot (1252), attested only once, with uncertain and disputed meaning and etymology; however, the form may simply show a transmission error.
