Etymology: < well adv. + approved adj.Earlier currency is probably implied by the following example, apparently showing an alteration of well approved by reanalysis of the prefix of the second element as a reduced form of en- prefix1 (see discussion at that entry, and compare a- prefix1):1474 in C. L. Kingsford Stonor Lett. & Papers (1919) I. 140 My right trusty and well enprovyd Brothyr, y recommend me unto yow, desiryng to here of your well fare.The same letter also includes an example of good enprovyd in similar use.
