Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: group n., -ism suffix.
Etymology: < group n. + -ism suffix. In sense 1 originally after French groupisme (1841 in the passage translated in quot. 1851 at sense 1). With sense 2 compare slightly earlier Oxford Group n.
1. The desire to belong to a group; the tendency to form factions (now chiefly Indian English). Also: the tendency to view people as members of a group, rather than as individuals.Cf. individualism n. 2, collectivism n. 1.
