Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: ground n., ivy n.
Etymology: < ground n. + ivy n. In sense 3 apparently showing folk-etymological alteration of herb Ive n. (compare post-classical Latin iva (from 10th cent. in British sources), in the same sense).In sense 1 these plants are so called because older botanists classified them as hedera ‘ivy’ on account of their creeping stems.
1. (a) The herb ale-hoof, Nepeta glechoma or Glechoma hederacea, a common labiate plant having bluish-purple flowers and kidney-shaped leaves. (b) The periwinkle, Vinca minor. Obsolete. rare.These plants have no obvious resemblance to ivy, but were classed by the older botanists as hedera on account of their creeping stems.
