释义

ecceint.

/ˈɛksi//ˈɛkeɪ//ˈɛtʃeɪ/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ecce.
Etymology: < classical Latin ecce lo! behold! < the same Italic base as Paelignian ecuc , Oscan ekuk this (a suffixed formation < the same Indo-European base as Gothic is : see he pron.) + -ce (enclitic particle) here, there (also seen in classical Latin hic , Old Latin hice this man, he) < the same base as the Indo-European forms cited at he pron.
Latin for ‘lo!’ or ‘behold!’ Used in phrases like Ecce signum! behold a sign! [In Ecce signum! < post-classical Latin ecce signum behold the proof! (10th cent. or earlier) < classical Latin ecce ecce int. + signum sign n., perhaps with parodic allusion to post-classical Latin ecce signum crucis behold the sign of the cross! (15th cent. or earlier); Falstaff is holding up his sword as he speaks.]
