Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably formed within English, by conversion. Etymon: gyaff v.
Etymology: Probably < gyaff v. (unless this is itself < the noun). Perhaps compare Scots †gaff loud, rude talk (1880, apparently rare), itself either < gaff to talk loudly (see gyaff v.), or showing a more direct semantic development of gawf n.
Guyana.
Idle chat, gossip. Also: an instance of this; a chat; a piece of gossip. Cf. gyaff v.

Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps (i) the same word as English regional (northern and north midlands) and Scots gaff to talk loudly, to chatter, to banter (19th cent.; 1721 in sense ‘to laugh loudly, to guffaw’: see gawf v. and compare the discussion at gaff n.2), or perhaps (ii) directly < gyaff n.
Caribbean (chiefly Guyana).
intransitive. To chat; to gossip. Cf. gyaff n.
