Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: gubernator n., -ial suffix; Latin gubernātor , -ial suffix.
Etymology: < gubernator n. or its etymon classical Latin gubernātor + -ial suffix. Compare gubernatory adj.In sense 2 after governor n. 7a(b). N.E.D. (1900) gives the pronunciation as (giū:bərnătōə·rial) /ˌɡjuːbərnəˈtɔərɪal/.
