Origin: A borrowing from Turkish. Etymon: Turkish gulet.
Etymology: < Turkish gulet, sailing warship, schooner, brigantine < French goélette , †goulette , probably via Italian goletta (see goelette n.). Compare modern Greek γολέτα . Compare earlier goelette n.The Turkish word gained greater currency in the latter half of the 20th cent. with the growth of Turkish coastal tourism.
A sailing boat, usually ketch- or schooner-rigged, chiefly used in the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea, esp. for holiday cruises. Cf. goelette n.

1998 Artist Mar. 13/3 The company have been organising sailing cruises on their boats along the unspoilt south-west coast of Turkey for 15 years; each ‘gulet’ carries a cook as well as the captain and crew.
2003 Los Angeles Times (Nexis) 20 Mar. ix. 12 Gulets..first appeared in the southern Mediterranean in the 8th century. While modern sailboats are now largely made of fiberglass, gulets continue to be built of wood in a traditional style.
