gulen.2

/ɡjuːl/
Etymology: < Old French gule, goule, medieval Latin gula Augusti. The ulterior etymology is unknown. The Welsh form is gwyl Awst (gwyl festival, believed to be < Latin vigilia vigil n.1), but as the medieval Latin and Old French terms were in continental use, this must be a mere popular etymology. The conjecture that gula is a corruption of ‘Dies Sancti Petri ad vincula’ is very unlikely, nor is it clear how it can be identified with the Latin gula ‘throat’.
