Etymology: Two words: 1. Arbitre (e mute), < Old French arbitre < Latin arbitrium judgement, will; 2. Arbitrie, -y, later < Latin arbitrium (compare ministry). In 15th cent. the spelling arbitre might represent either, as in cite, citie, city. Old French had also a rare arbitrie.
Obsolete.
1. Power to choose or act; own will or pleasure; arbitrary will.
