Etymology: < Hindi gulāb jāmun, gulāb jāman jaman plum, kind of sweet < Urdu gulāb rose water ( < Persian gulāb : see julep n.) + Hindi jāmun , jāman jaman plum (the tree and its fruit; see jamun n.).The sweet is probably so called because it resembles the fruit (in both shape and scent). Compare the following earlier use of the Hindi phrase in an English context, used to denote the rose apple (compare jambu n. and the discussion at jamun n.):1874 Jrnl. Asiatic Soc.
