γ. 1800s Yendat, 1800s Yendot.

Origin: A borrowing from Huron. Etymon: Huron Wę:ndat.
Etymology: < Huron Wę:ndat (1639 as ȣendat ), self-designation (originally of the Huron Confederacy, later of a specific Iroquoian people: see note at definition), further etymology uncertain. Compare French Ouendat (1632 as Houendate ). Forms like Wayundatt and Wyandot at α. forms probably reflect approximations of the long nasal vowel in the first syllable of the Huron etymon. Compare earlier Huron n.The β. forms may reflect a variant of the Huron word with a prenominal prefix. In the γ. forms, the initial Y- is probably intended to represent /waɪ/, as in the letter name Y n.
