Etymology: Apparently < the name of James Greenacre (1785–1837), English criminal, who was hanged at Newgate for the murder of Hannah Brown.This origin of the expression is commonly attributed to a belief that the first attempt to hang Greenacre ended in failure when the rope broke. However, contemporary accounts of the execution mention no such event, though Greenacre may have attempted to hang himself while in custody. Another possible explanation (see quot. 1997) is the fact that parts of his victim's dismembered body were found scattered over a wide area, something echoed in the scattering of the spilled goods.
