Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; probably modelled on a Russian lexical item. Etymons: great adj., Russian n.
Etymology: < great adj. + Russian n., probably after Russian (now historical) velikorus, velikoross, nouns, velikorusskij, (now rare) velikorossijskij, adjectives. Compare German (now historical) großrussisch , adjective (1771 or earlier), Großrusse , noun (1791 or earlier), French (now historical) grand-russe , noun (1801 or earlier). Compare Little Russian n., Little Russian adj.The term was coined in the late 18th cent. to distinguish a native of those East Slavonic-speaking areas which were never part of the Polish-Lithuanian state from the Little Russian of Ukraine and the White Russian of Belorussia.
