Etymology: Assamese, < kālā black + āzār disease.
Pathology.
A febrile disease of tropical and subtropical regions caused by the protozoan Leishmania donovani and transmitted by sand flies of the genus Phlebotomus: usually associated with emaciation, enlargement of the spleen and liver, and often bronzing of the skin. Also known as visceral leishmaniasis.
