单词 greenovite
释义

greenoviten.

Brit. /ˈɡriːnəvʌɪt/, U.S. /ˈɡrinəˌvaɪt/
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French greenovite.
Etymology: < French greenovite (A. Dufrénoy 1840, in Ann. des mines 17 529) < the name of G. B. Greenough (1778–1855), English geologist + -ite -ite suffix1.Dufrénoy apparently assumed that the name was pronounced with final /f/ (like enough, etc.), and hence produced the form greenovite either with the intervocalic voicing characteristic of French, or as a partial Latinization of the name. A form greenoughite is also occasionally found in English-language sources.
Mineralogy. Now rare.
A reddish mineral containing manganese, now regarded as a variety of sphene.
