Etymology: < post-classical Latin gonorrhoea, gonorroea (in men) spermatorrhoea, (in women) leukorrhoea (4th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek γονόρροια (in men) spermatorrhoea, (in women) leukorrhoea < ancient Greek γόνος semen (see gono- comb. form) + -ρροία -rrhoea comb. form. Compare Middle French gonorrhee (mid 16th cent.; French gonorrhée), Italian gonorrea (14th cent.).With the α. forms compare post-classical Latin gomorrea (from 13th cent. in British sources), Middle French gormorree (late 15th cent.), Italian gomorrea (14th cent.). Medicine.
Originally: involuntary discharge of semen (= spermatorrhœa n. at spermato- comb. form 3) (now historical). In later use: a disease causing a whitish discharge from the penis or vagina; spec. a sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, characterized by inflammation of and mucoid discharge from the mucous membranes of the genito-urinary tract, and less frequently the rectum or other sites, sometimes with blood-borne spread of infection to the joints, heart, or meninges, or (in women) the development of pelvic inflammatory disease. Also: an instance or case of such disease.In quot. 1598 figurative.
