单词 godet
释义

godetn.

Brit. /ɡəʊˈdɛt/, /ˈɡəʊdeɪ/, U.S. /ˌɡoʊˈdɛt/, /ˌɡoʊˈdeɪ/
Forms: 1500s–1600s goddet, 1600s 1800s– godet.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French godet.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French godet (late 12th cent.), probably < a first element of uncertain origin (see note) + French -et -et suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin godettus , godettum (from 1303 in British sources). Compare earlier goddard n. Compare also earlier goblet n.1Further etymology. The first element of the French word is perhaps < Middle Dutch codde staff, club, cylindrical piece of wood (Dutch kodde ; compare Middle Low German (Hamburg) kodde ; probably < the same Germanic base as cod n.1), but other derivations have also been suggested. A relationship in Anglo-Norman and Middle French between godet and gobelet goblet n.1 has also been suggested, but this poses phonological difficulties. Possible evidence for earlier currency. Compare the following, which could perhaps be interpreted as showing currency of this word in Middle English, but is more likely to show its Anglo-Norman etymon:1383 in J. T. Fowler Extracts Acct. Rolls Abbey of Durham (1899) II. 428 Item unum Godet cum treacle. Earlier attestations in Latin contexts (from a1300) are likely to show the Anglo-Norman word, but compare discussion at goddard n. Compare also the surname Thomas Godet (a1400).
