Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: god n., fearer n.
Etymology: < god n. + fearer n. Compare earlier God-fearing adj.In specific use with reference to the New Testament after various Hellenistic Greek expressions used in the New Testament, e.g. θεοσεβής (John 9:31), σεβόμενος τὸν θεόν (16:14, 18:7), ϕοβούμενος τὸν θεόν (e.g. Acts 10:2, 13:16), all probably ultimately after Hebrew yir'ē 'ădōnāy (plural noun), lit. ‘those who fear the Lord’ (Psalm 115:11, etc.).
A person who fears God; historical (in the New Testament period) a Gentile who worshipped the God of the Jews without converting to Judaism.
