Etymology: Partly a reduplication of Malay gong, gung (see gong n.2); partly an independent echoic formation: compare gum-gum n.The reduplicated form may have come from some Malayan dialect; compare gonggong barking of dogs, ginggong a ‘Jew's harp’ or similar toy. Compare German gonggong, gonggon, Dutch, Swedish gonggong, Danish gongon, a gong.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈgong-ˌgong.
