Etymology: Old English gál = Old Saxon gêl (Middle Dutch, Dutch geil, popularly also gail, geel), Old High German (Middle High German, German) geil, Gothic *gail-s (whence gailjan to cheer, make glad), perhaps cognate with Latin hilaris, from a root *ghῑl.
