Etymology: < Hindi gobar < Prakrit govara , perhaps an alteration (with suffix substitution) of an unattested form *govaya ( > Hindi regional govā cow dung) < Sanskrit gomaya (adjective) relating to cattle, (noun) cow dung < go cow n.¹ + -maya, suffix forming adjectives.The Hindi word has perhaps been understood (by folk etymology) as representing Sanskrit go cow + vara boon, gift. With gobar gas at main sense compare Hindi gobar gais ( < gobar + gais < gas n.¹).
