Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Golding.
Etymology: < the surname Golding of the plant's (unidentified) first cultivator (fl. late 18th cent.: see quot. 1798 at sense 2).John Golding (d. 1807) of Ditton Court, Ditton, near East Malling, has tentatively been suggested as a possible candidate.

1. attributive and in the genitive. Designating a cultivated variety of hop highly valued in brewing, and (in later use) any of a group of varieties related to this. Also: designating a plant or a female flower (cone) of any of such a variety.
