Chiefly Ice Hockey and Lacrosse.
A player whose principal duty is to defend a goal by attempting to prevent the ball or puck from entering it, or the position of such a player; a goalkeeper. Cf. goalie n., goaler n. 1, netminder n. at net n.1 Compounds 3.In both Ice Hockey and Lacrosse the goaltender is required to wear additional protective equipment, is the only player allowed to touch the puck or ball with his or her hands, and is protected from interference by attacking players when in the crease (see goal crease n. at goal n. Compounds 2).
