Etymology: < golden adj. + spur n.¹In sense 1 after Spanish espuela dorada (in Caballeros de la Espuela Dorada Knights of the Golden Spur: a1531 as Cavalleros de la Espuela Dorada). Compare Italian Cavalieri dello Speron d'Oro (1686 or earlier; now historical).

1. An order of papal knighthood, first conferred in 1357, (originally) often in conjunction with the title of Count Palatine. Frequently in Knight of the Golden Spur: a member of this order.In 1841, Pope Gregory XVI renamed the order as the Order of Saint Sylvester and the Golden Militia. In 1905, Pope Pius X divided the order into two, one half taking the name Order of Saint Sylvester and the other reviving the name Order of the Golden Spur.

Micheli Marquez calls them Knights of the Golden Spur in Italy, and not getting any certain knowledge of the original of this Order, under that Title, he is content to believe a Relation of some of the Roman Courtiers, who told him that it took beginning in the time of Constantine the Great, and that the Knights had their Title from the nature of their Office, which was to take off the Emperors Spurs.
